COMECOCO2: Advancing Renewable Methanol for Sustainable Transport

The COMECOCO2 project aims to develop an efficient renewable methanol production system using technology entirely developed in Spain. By integrating captured CO2 from wastewater treatment plants, regenerated water, and renewable electricity, the project will create a Power-to-Liquid (P2L) solution for green methanol, with applications in maritime transport and sustainable aviation fuels.

Unlike conventional methods, COMECOCO2 uses high-temperature co-electrolysis (co-SOEC) of CO2 and water, significantly improving efficiency. The project will also develop next-generation co-SOEC stacks and advanced catalytic reactors, incorporating innovative materials such as high-entropy oxides and nano-structured coatings (PVD and ALD). Additionally, the integration of complementary thermal processes will further enhance system performance.

COMECOCO2 is led by an interdisciplinary consortium, including six leading research centers (IREC, LUREDERRA, CSIC-INMA, EURECAT, UPC, and CENER) specializing in energy materials, hydrogen, catalysis, and P2X technologies. The industrial pillar includes major companies MMM, ACCIONA, and AMES, alongside SMEs NANO4ENERGY, AESA, and GREENG, bringing expertise in ceramics, thin-film coatings, system design, and thermal management. Additionally, an external advisory committee, including CEPSA, SyMNAVAL, and the Port Authority of Barcelona, will provide industry insights to support future deployment.

This initiative is part of “Activa Startups”, a program within the “Activa” family, promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Industry and Tourism as part of its National Strategy for Connected Industry 4.0. The program aims to drive the digital transformation of the Spanish industry, fostering growth potential and strengthening the local supply of digital solutions.

The TransMisiones 2024 initiative is an action carried out in collaboration between CDTI and AEI, as part of the State Plan for Scientific, Technical, and Innovation Research (PEICTI). It coordinates the funding of groups of research organizations, knowledge dissemination entities, and company clusters that collaborate to jointly develop a coordinated R&D action aimed at addressing the challenges identified in the thematic priorities or Missions.
